Zaterdag 28 mei 2011. De dag van de officiële parade voor 's werelds grootste autosportevenement. Ik was erg benieuwd wat ik er aan zou treffen, aangezien de Indy 500 race zelf al meer dan 300.000 bezoekers trekt. Achterop mijn ticket een duidelijk overzicht van alle tribune secties, zodat ik eenvoudig mijn plek moest kunnen vinden. Sectie 11, rij A, stoel 156. Na een taxirit downtown begaf ik me richting de hoek van Washington street en Pennsylvania Avenue. Ik verwachte daar een grote hoeveelheid tribunes en dranghekken, maar wat ik er aan trof verbaasde me nogal.
Niks geen dranghekken, en al helemaal geen tribunes. Gewoon 3 rijen plastic klapstoeltjes met daarvoor een blauwe lijn waar je niet overheen mag met je voeten. Op die klapstoeltjes legio Amerikaanse gezinnen met kleine kinderen en hele grote koelboxen. Uit die koelboxen stroomt een welhaast onuitputtelijke voorraad eten en drinken, die door de kinderen vakkundig wordt geconsumeerd. Dat alles nog ver voordat de parade begonnen is.
De parade zelf is amusant, stiekem best amateuristisch en vooral heel erg Amerikaans. Het is een soort mengelmoesje van praalwagens met "freshly ribboned" missen, enkele beroemdheden, natuurlijk alle coureurs, viervoudig winnaar A.J. Hoyt (die je nu alleen nog met een hele grote schoenlepel in een raceauto krijgt maar dat terzijde) en vooral veel marching bands. Heel veel marching bands. Ik geloof werkelijk dat er in de USA meer marching bands zijn dan lampjes op Times Square. En dat zegt heel wat zoals u eerder heeft kunnen lezen.
Maar wat me het meeste is bijgebleven van de Indy 500 parade is toch wel hoe amateurisme en 's werelds grootste autosport evenement zomaar hand in hand kunnen gaan. Indy racing is wat dat betreft echt heel anders dan de Formule1.
Oh, en ja ik weet dat op geen van de foto's hierboven een marching band is te vinden. Dat komt omdat ik marching bands zo stom vind dat ik weiger er ook maar één op de foto te zetten. Dat u het even weet.
